October 2009

Black History Month is here with us once again. We have produced a special newsletter to promote as many of the events occurring across the West Midlands region as we could cram in. Although the BEAM group exists to offer direct support to the communities of Sandwell, we realised that many of you would want to also know about what is happening a little further afield too.

We couldn't hope to cram into the newsletter details of every single event going on over the next few weeks - so we have compromised and included links below to other web based resources. These will help you to find more information on specific events listed in the newsletter, as well as other events and background information on Black History Month itself.

Black History Month (BHM) Afrikan History Month (AHM) is held every October in Britain, and February in USA and Canada. The aims are to:

• Promote knowledge of the Black History, Cultural and Heritage
• Disseminate information on positive Black contributions to British Society
• Heighten the confidence and awareness of Black people to their cultural heritage.

The origins of BHM go back to 1926 when Carter G Woodson, editor for thirty years of the Journal of Negro History, established African Caribbean celebrations in America. It is still celebrated there in February each year.

In Britain, the BHM has now grown to over 6,000 events. (updated October 2007 its 20th anniversary) This site will celebrate BHM all year round. We will regularly update it and use it to educate, inform, and build confidence. Let's celebrate and share our African and Caribbean history.
